If you want a costume that is classic yet comfortable and easy to put together, then you need not look further than Mario Halloween costumes.  Though not exactly scary, Halloween stopped being solely about scary stuff quite a while ago, and today is more of a season of fun and costumery.  Why not dress up as the most popular video game character of all time?

Mario is the main character of the eponymous game franchise.  He was originally a carpenter with a not-so-catchy name back in what is considered his first game.  Since then he has graduated from jumping over pixelated barrels to stomping on turtles, to saving high-resolution princesses in distress.  In fact, Mario is an icon of the video game industry, having passed through most stages of video game innovation himself.  Though the same could be argues about the other characters in the franchise, let’s face it – we really care about the main protagonist the most.

The character is said to be an Italian from Brooklyn, New York, and this is carried into the voice acting for the character in later games.  His appearance is clean and simple yet cartoony, which became a standard for many Nintendo games.  This appearance originally stemmed from the graphic limitations of older game consoles, but today it is preserved for many reasons.  His personality is classic protagonist – Mario is optimistic, energetic, and fearless, often surpassing his apparent physical limitations with high and long jumps accompanied by various superpowers as granted by power-up items.

Mario Halloween costumes are undoubtedly easy to produce, with the only challenges being getting the right kinds of hat and mustache.  Mario is portly and quite short in the game, but there is no serious reason to stick to it too fervently.  He wears a light blue jumper with no pockets and plain seams.  On the front are two large yellow buttons, used to fasten the shoulder straps of the jumper.  Underneath, he wears a red, long-sleeved shirt.  He also wears brown leather work boots, and sometimes white gloves.  He also wears a soft red cap, like an Irish caubeen but with a bill, with a white spot at the front, within which is a red letter “M” – for Mario, as we would guess.  Lastly, there is his iconic mustache, which is dark, trimmed, upturned at the ends, and with a fringe along the bottom lengths.

Ideally, you would also have dark hair with a feelers haircut, which is often mistaken for sideburns.  If you have blond or red hair, or if your hair is too short as the case may be, you will want to get a wig.  The mustache will most likely need to be bought too, since not many people keep mustaches of the same quality as Mario’s.  Remember: gloves are optional, hair is quite important, and the hat and mustache are critical to the look.

Aside from Mario Halloween costumes, you can also wear costumes based on different characters in the Mario game franchise.  You can dress up as Luigi, Mario’s younger brother (they’re twins, actually) and sidekick, who wears the same basic outfit as Mario but with differences in color.  You could dress up as a Koopa, a Goomba, or as Bowser, the big bad boss that you eventually go toe-to-toe with.  You might even want to dress up as Toad (who is an anthropomorphic mushroom), or as Yoshi, Mario’s trusty dinosaur steed.  Or if so inclined, you could even dress up as Princess Peach, the perennial damsel-in-distress.
